Monochrome Sweatsuit is the moniker for shredgaze guitarist Justin Tolan, currently performing with Crispin Wah and as a solo artist.
Born and raised around Atlanta, Justin started playing guitar in 1995. He practiced obsessively and began teaching guitar when he was 16. He attended Berklee College of Music on scholarship, graduating in 2009 with a degree in Professional Music. Performing with the rock band RIBS, opening performances include Helmet, Circa Survive, Intronaut, O'Brother and more.
Justin relocated back to Atlanta in 2013, soon after winning Steve Vai's "Best in Shred" contest through Sam Ash Music Store. The prize for the contest was to open for Vai in Tennessee. This was the beginning of Monochrome Sweatsuit.
After a chance encounter with Bassist/Producer Bruther Brown in 2015, they formed Shredgaze band Crispin Wah.
As of 2023, Justin has 7 releases as Monochrome Sweatsuit, 2 releases with Armadillo, and 9 releases with Crispin Wah. He produces a weekly comedy podcast called Piss Jug and can be seen weekly on Curiolab both as a host and live performer. Justin is currently available for virtual guitar lessons and freelance sound design work.
